Explore Ridgeland Highlights Retail Trail for Tax-Free Shopping Weekend
Ridgeland, MS – Officials with Explore Ridgeland, are encouraging visitors and guests alike to mark their calendars and save the date for Mississippi’s tax-free shopping weekend July 12-14, earlier in the month than in previous years.
Senate Bill 2470, signed into law on April 22, 2024, shifts the tax-free weekend from the last Friday in July to the second Friday, making this year’s event run from July 12 at 12:01 a.m. through July 14 at midnight. This extension gives shoppers additional time to take advantage of the sales tax exemption on clothing, footwear, and specific school supplies, all priced under $100. According to State Senator Walter Michel, this change accommodates students returning to class as early as mid-July.
Chris Chapman, President/CEO of Explore Ridgeland, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming event.
“We’re thrilled to invite shoppers from across the region to Ridgeland to experience the best shopping in the state while saving money with tax-free benefits,” said Chapman. “Our city offers a unique blend of shopping, dining, and relaxation that makes for the perfect summer getaway.”
The Ridgeland Retail Trail is not just a single route, but rather a singular opportunity to explore all the locally-owned establishments that have made Ridgeland a shopping mecca for locals and visitors from across the Southeast. The Retail Trail winds throughout the city encompassing these multiple districts: Renaissance at Colony Park, The Township at Colony Park, and the newly renovated Northpark + County Line Road District, The Railroad District, the Bill Waller Craft Center, Highway 51 + Trace Station + Oak Place District, and Old Canton Road + Lake Harbour Road District.
Ridgeland retainers are already getting ready for the signature shopping weekend.
“As a retailer, we love Mississippi’s tax-free weekend and the excitement that little bit of relief brings,” said Lesley Holleman, owner of Fleet Feet in Ridgeland. “The phrase “tax-free” gets people fired up to shop, and Mississippians from all over the state come to stock up on new shoes and clothing. Our sales for the weekend have grown each year since it started. It’s so fun for us to see the excitement build around supporting local businesses!”
“We see numerous return visitors from various states transforming the tax-free weekend into the ultimate girlfriend getaway,” added Chapman. “Ridgeland offers a variety of hotels, spas, and over 140 dining options, making it the perfect destination for a refreshing weekend escape. With local cuisine, live music, and relaxing spas, there are ample opportunities to unwind after a day of serious shopping.”
